Have you ever heard of a capsule wardrobe? It is a smaller selection of clothing that all complement each other. And because they all complement each other, it’s easy to interchange outfits. One thing I really love about capsule wardrobes is that all the items match. It just makes it easier for my kids to get dressed in the morning.
Now with back to school shopping coming up, this is the perfect time to plan out a capsule wardrobe for your kids. And I did all the work for you. I’ve picked out the items and linked them all below for you so your back to school shopping can be a breeze.
I put these together while shopping for my kindergartener. But these would work for preschool or early elementary. Comment below if you want one for different age groups as well.
How To Start Building A Capsule Wardrobe
I bet a lot of you are like me when first planning out a capsule wardrobe for my kids. I was so excited about the idea of a capsule wardrobe and it sounded perfect for our families needs. But Where. Do. I. Start? It felt so overwhelming. But I’m here to help!
To start, I like to choose a color scheme. It instantly narrows down my clothing choices.
Then I make a list of exactly what I need for that child. This will vary based on your kids and what season you’re buying for. Also make sure you consider your laundry routine. For example, if you have one laundry day each week, make sure you have enough items to get through an entire week without stress.
And then with a shopping list and a color scheme, I head to my favorite stores for kids clothes (really I just pull up the apps on my phone), and I get to shopping. You can check things off your list as you add them to your cart. And bam. You’re done.
Let’s Get Started
I’m gonna take a bunch of the leg work out of this for you, because I’m already shopping for my daughter. So I’ll shop for your kids too.
I put together 4 different girls capsule wardrobes for you. One from Old Navy, Walmart, H&M and Zara. So hopefully there is something there for you that fits your preference and budget. Scroll down to find those capsules wardrobes and links.
But before we get to those, I want to break down what I pick for a capsule wardrobe and why to help you build your own.
Tops
For my kids, I like to start with one of the multipacks of shirts. Honestly, it’s mostly because it takes less thought. The multipacks come with a shirts that all match, and that’s usually where I go to choose my color scheme. Then I might add in a couple blouses, t-shirts, and depending on the season, a couple sweaters or cardigans.
Bottoms
I like it grab a couple pairs of jeans in different washes. Then I pick out a couple pairs of pants that are a little more fun, that still fit with the color scheme.
Other
Now you’ll want to think about things like dresses or shoes. My daughter loves dresses, and we attend church weekly so I included dresses. I didn’t include shoes in these, but I make sure my kids always have at least 1 pair of sneakers, 1 pair of dress shoes, and 1 pair of boots. We’ve had good luck finding great deals at DSW (I always check the clearance section first).
